Batik Painting

6 December 2012

BATIK PAINTING

It was my first time to ever try Batik Painting. I always thought batik was a boring style of art. This is because most batiks are have flowers or nature patterns as their theme. However this experience had changed that thought of mine.

THE PEARL GALAXY

We got to have a try on Malaysia’s unique art – batik during a one-day trip to a family-owned batik and handicrafts retailer on the 27th of November. It was actually our second time (first time being Urbanscapes 3 days ago) going on a field trip together with the April intake Foundation in Design students thus we got along quite well. At Jadi Batek Gallery which is located at Jalan Inai, Kuala Lumpur, we were given a brief explanation on the traditional techniques of printing batik using wax and dye on fabric and then we proceeded to work on our own designs. We were quite unsure of how to start off at first but the kind staff over there helped us a lot by standing beside us and giving guidance.
For our class, we are supposed to design our batik based on a chosen theme in a group, and all four of our designs must come together in a way that it shows harmony and unity. Our group decided to work on the theme of ‘Pearls in the Universe' by using a colour palette which is similar to the natural colour of pearls. The outcome of our batik is in a darker tone of the natural colours. We used pink, yellow, grey and black as the main colours instead of the cliché colour choices used in batik printing.
When combined together, our batik design brings the meaning of blooming beauty and success. When in the sea, a pearl is just like a tiny grain of sand; and when compared to the universe, it would just be a speck of dust, or almost non-existent.

THE CORAL PEARL GALAXY

Each and every individual in the world is the same as a pearl. People tend to overlook our unique identity as the bad traits of us tend to be more prominent to the eyes of outsiders. It is just like how you will never get to witness the beauty and shine of a pearl if you never look deep inside a clamshell to find out. It teaches us a lesson of not to look down on anyone no matter what sort of social status they are in. Although we have no idea of when is it going to happen, for sure there will be a point of time in everyone’s lives where they will shine the most.

Paint To Music

Expressionism Art

Classical Music
The Summer Cottage
Classical music was a stroke of passion and drama with every string and rhythm harmonising my heart. I wanted to picture just that in my painting. When the music soared with suspense, the rhythm of my hands follows the passionate flow. This takes me back to the opera days where the legendary musicians still remembered till today. Beethoven,  Mozart  and Giovanni Paisiello . The warm colours signify the passion and the paint stroke signify the drama.
When I listened to the classical songs, I felt the fiery passion in me as the music was full of drama and suspense. It made me picture a beautiful meadow where the golden sun bathed the landscape with warmness. The shimmering river water flowing through to the east. Maple trees stand tall along the pathway where a farmer and his loyal dog enjoyed an evening stroll. With wavy strokes, I want to show that even a small peaceful country side has an exciting and passionate atmosphere to it too.

Hip Hop Music
The Chirpy Cat
Hip hop songs make me feel energise and excited as the beat and catchy tunes fills me with joy. The little bob cat grinning away as it’s fuzzy fur burst out of laughter. Orange is a colour of jovial and that was what I felt when I danced to the beat. Hip hop music is not all about heavy beats and heavy rapping, time has change this genre of music. Now, there is melodies and rhythm in hip hop too as they fused with some rapping style. Sparks of electric and splashes of paint drops gives the painting enthusiasm and lively feeling. Makes me feel like a gleeful cat dancing away with excitement’s sparks flying all over to the beat of the song.

MOODBOARD

Dreamy Sea

Bedroom
It is a getaway homestay bedroom inspired by the sea . The simplicity and shabbiness of the overall interior makes it homely . The patterns and the colour of the sea in the bedroom brings the dreamy ambience to one’s stay in the bedroom. The Victorian age furniture gives a tinge of classic touch to the interior. This is to create a beautiful dream with a nostalgia touch of classic old times and that is where guests in this bedroom would experience.

Walls and cornices
The cornices are craved with patterns of flowers and waves of the sea. The walls are plain and simple with no hard texture on it. This is to make the room calm and smooth. The colour of the walls are turquoise blue . This makes the room reflect the cool of the sea. Besides that, the seafoam colored wall also gives the dreamy and tranquil atmosphere to the room. The wall behind the bed is pale yellow in colour. This is to add contrast to the cool atmosphere of the room by giving a tinge of warmness . Like the sun by the cool beach.

The flooring
There are a few choices of wood which are Teak allover , Canterbury oak and Beach timber. This will give the cozy feel to the room. It also gives warmness when we walk on it. The ambience of the room is mostly cool because of the sea theme thus we need our some warmness . The texture and colour of the flooring also gives the feeling of having the nice soft sand of the beach .

The window
The window frame is made from white timber. It’s shabby looking to mirror some beach shacks by the seaside. The window overlook a beautiful scenery of the lighthouse by the sea. This view is like a painting for the bedroom.

The paintings and decors
The paintings are all themed with the seas as this will give the bedroom a feel of being close to the sea. The decors are simple with elements of the ocean and sea creatures as well as nature. This is to enhance the sea theme of the interior.

Furniture
The furniture are all Victorian style inspired and white in colour to bring the classic yet simple touch to it. The bed sheet is made of silk and in sea foam colour. Thus it feels like the cool breeze and calm water when we sleep on the bed. Same goes for the material use for the seat of the chair.

The Thoughts Experienced
The Dreamy Sea Bedroom

Enjoy the beauty of the sea creatures under the sea, have sweet memories with love ones, go strolling down the beach enjoying the cold breeze , some fun picture memories to be put in an album, fall in love with the sun set and fall asleep dreaming wonders under the starry sky.

Circus Wedding

The colours used here are red ,blue ,yellow ,green and white. The red and white tent brings out the circus atmosphere where the newlyweds have their first dance. The after party is fun and lively. There will be fireworks to enhance the magical romantic night for the newlyweds . There will be spotlights and show lights as many fun circus performance and music will be on.

The tables are decorated with lovely flowers and themed white for a modern and luxurious dining. Candies as table gifts for the guests . The bridesmaids will have a little circus twist on their usual bridesmaid’s dress. All getting into character for the circus themed wedding.

Balloons to bring out the fun and cheerful atmosphere of the wedding.  A simple white wedding dress for the bride with quirky heels and a nice tuxedo for the groom. A little fun accessories for the bride like a fun flower pin up to her hair to bring out the vibrant joy of her .

A lovely custom made circus ring for the bride and groom to cherish their quirky and lovely memories then and yet to come. A beautiful layered white wedding cake that it’s layers are stacked tilting right and left as it shows a breath taking yet fun and spontaneous wedding cake.
Wedding invitations like tickets to the circus. A fun creative way to invite guests to the wedding.

It will be a love story just like the movie “ water for elephants” where the mood is set. There is a little vintage touch to the contemporary circus wedding theme.

My Monogram

The Heartbeat Monogram

Inspired by the flow of statistic and stigma, with just three hills and a half of a line forms the abstract monogram of the letter 'M' and 'W'. By joining the letters it could be at first interpreted as a scribble of angular lines. The initials of my name is hidden from prompt views. My personalities are playful at times and sentimental at other times were shown in the monogram.Similar to the graph of life where there is the down time and good times. However, we must continue our journey as the zigzag monogram is still flowing.
 Creating My Monogram

IDEAS

First was to brainstorm ideas and get approvals by Miss Lisa our 2D design lecturer. The goal is to create our trademark initials without being too obvious visually besides representing our personality.
It finally came down to this idea:

STENCIL MAKING

Monograms are prominent trademarks of designers used in brands or products all over the world.
So here comes the stencils making process for printing later:

The stencil i choose was an acetate because it's light and durable.First i placed a photocopy of my monogram design on top of the acetate. Hold it down into place with masking tape. Then carefully cut out the lines and shape of the monogram using a blade. It was hard work as there can't be any extra cuts at the edges of the form. This is to prevent paint or dye when applied on the stencil to seep out of place. I had many failures, however with the encouragement from Miss Lisa, i continued my attempts. Miss Lisa also taught me new techniques on stencil cutting that i never knew. Easy and small strokes at the time and not a fast slice across as this may lead to accidentally cutting out of line. "We Learn New Things Everyday" that's what i learnt from Miss Lisa.

PRINTING

I placed the stencil on top of my object to be printed on(book cover) and hold it in place with masking tape.I used kichen sponge as my tool to add colour onto my stencil. The sponge was good as i found the surface are was able to cover wide. It was also not a hard print but gradual so we can keep adding layers if we want it richer in colour. The texture was also rich and profound.

Slow dabbes over the stencil. I repeated the dabbes again to make the layers richer and even. After about 40 seconds , i removed the stencil carefully without disturbing the print on the book cover.

Final outcomes

A MOVIE POSTER

THE GHOUL PATROL
The movie revolves around four main stereotypical high school students. The unlikely-hood for them to team up for the survival of man kind as sticking to the status quo was ideal. Here is a synopsis of the movie:

On one sunny afternoon, a replacement teacher took up the role as a chaperon to accompany Mr Toms’s students on a fieldtrip to the fun fair as he was strangely unable to present that day. As usual, the class was not as one but broken up into different groups walking scattered all over the place. There were the jocks, the brainy, the La-la girls ,the bleaches and so on. However, everyone shared one common interest that day…it was to have fun at the carnival rather than sitting in a boring class.

However , things didn’t quite go as planned for everyone… or should I say went terribly wrong. We all know the world has been messed up quite badly nowadays with global warming , extinctions of species, sighting of “Aliens” and so on. This time , it worse than that as line between fiction and reality has been mixed up.

“The End of Mankind” predictions just came true without any warning!!!

It was a scene of total chaos as the Carnival’s Clowns whom do witchcrafts were turning people into the walking dead all around.

By some chance luck, the junky boy, the plastic fantastic girl, the brainy science freak girl and the replacement managed to survive the first wave of the clowns and were the only survivors in London.(They found out soon enough). They decided to team up to fight evil and survive as they had nothing to lose.

As the movie progresses , the team realises that someone “ a person” was the mastermind for this catastrophe. Someone created these clowns to take over the world starting from London.

However , as time passes by , there was a suspicion going around in the team. Someone in the team seems like the ultimate villain or traitor….. WHOM MIGHT THAT BE…..

THEME and ELEMENTS
The Ghoul Patrol poster is inspired by the theme of the LEFT FOR DEAD video game.

The genre of this movie is horror/comedy.

The setting of this film is in the 20th century ,at the fun fair in London , Great
Britain.

The font used is a 60’s cowboy era to match the quirky atmosphere in a carnival as well as to compliment the comedy genre of the movie. The fonts are all emphasised by tinges of red to make them bold.

Minimalism in colour theme is used here. The mostly greyscale of the poster gives an old school touch for the high school students as if signifying the possibility of the movie’s heroes are all history/gone. It also brings the gloominess and haunting atmosphere that we as audience will experience watching the movie. The red splashes gives the overall poster a punch of excitement and violence.

CHARACTERS  ROLE in the Presentation of the Poster

Take away the all the characters from the poster and you will have an absolutely a feeling of emptiness, dark, deserted and gloomy ambience. By adding the characters not only introduce the lead heroes in the movie but also adds comedy and familiarity for the audience to relate to . As all four characters are portrayed differently according to their personalities. THE CHARACTERS BRING THE MOVIE AND POSTER TO LIFE.

 Behind The Scenes

Did our photoshoot with people staring amusingly at us
